Foundation’s Habitat Stewardship Program RMEF’s Habitat
Stewardship Program, working to improve elk country, is active in every state
with wild, free-ranging elk. We work with federal and state agencies,
private landowners and other non-profits to ensure that elk habitat continues
to support the wildlife we love. Accomplishments in 2008 include: • Enhancing 156,886
acres as part of 251 projects in 18 states • The Dunoir grazing
allotment waiver, protecting critical forage on elk winter range near Dubois,
Wyoming • Prescribed burns
across elk country —including Hermosa Drainage in Colorado, Grygla in Minnesota
and Pushmataha in Oklahoma—that rejuvenate the landscape and encourage forage
growth. • Noxious weed
treatment—including Alder Creek in Oregon and Montgomery Ridge in
Washington—that combats invasive plants that outcompete native flora. • Improving understory
vegetation—including Gallinas in New Mexico, Norbeck Wildlife Preserve in South
Dakota and Delano Lake in Wisconsin—by removing overgrown trees and shrubs to
allow grasses and forbs to thrive. • Aspen
restoration—including Alturas in California, Dahlgreen in Utah and Pole Creek
in Idaho—that reinvigorates the most productive upland habitat in the West. Financial support of RMEF’s
Habitat Stewardship Program will enable us to deepen relationships with our
partners, increase our flexibility to respond to habitat emergencies and
continue enhancing elk county for years to come. Give now and support habitat
stewardship to ensure a future for elk, other wildlife and their habitat. RMEF’S NATIONAL PRIORITIES FOR 2009 • Aspen Restoration • Noxious Weed
Treatment • Prescribed Burns • Thinning of
