ODE TO A VOLUNTEER

Many will be shocked to find when the Day of Judgment nears

That there's a special place in heaven set-aside for volunteers,

Furnished with big recliners, satin couches and footstools.

Where there is no committee chairman, no group leaders or car pools,

No eager team that needs a coach, no bazaar and no bake sale.

There will be nothing to staple, not one thing to fold or mail.

Telephone lists will be outlawed, but a finger snap will bring,

Cool drinks and gourmet dinners, and rare treats fit for a king.

You ask:  Who'll serve these privileged few,

And work for all they're worth?

Why, all those who reaped the benefits

And not once volunteered on Earth.

MONTANA STATE RAFFLE

Congratulations go out to Jeff Michels of Box Elder, Montana for winning the Montana State Raffle.  Jeff, who attends the Havre banquet every year, had a choice of the complete Elk Camp or $2,500 cash and he chose the camp.  Good luck with the hunt Jeff!

WE DID IT!!!! - Steve Decker, Regional Director

Hello All… According to my figures, we did it!  Another million dollar net year.  The first state to achieve this mark two years in a row.  If you look at the net above you will find that the total is $928,476.  This number does not include the $135,000 from Paul G. Allen for Blackfoot/Clearwater making the total $1,063,476.  After adjusting for expenses, we should come in about $1,060,000.   66% net to gross isn't bad either.

Attending nationals in Reno this coming February?

Check out the special Montana Volunteers auction item at the Ladie's Luncheon on Thursday afternoon.

(It’s okay guys – just give her the charge card!)

Also – make sure you have your reservations in for Volunteer Appreciation Night on Friday.  It’s a wild and crazy time you won’t want to miss. You’ll be amazed at how much fun you‘ll have!!  See you in Reno!

It’s December already!  Once again it’s time to reflect on the past year  - evaluate our program – identify problem areas, work the kinks out, celebrate the successes and plan to move ahead for the future.  This has been an extremely challenging year for the RMEF as an organization.  We have a new CEO leading us in our mission.  Some tough decisions have been made that affected many of our friends. The RMEF is streamlining overhead costs and will be putting more dollars back on the ground for actual habitat improvement and protection.  As we move on, and as time passes, we will realize the benefits and rewards of those decisions.  You, the volunteer, play a very important role in the restructuring of the foundation and in helping to make the vision for our future become a reality.

This is also an appropriate time to say THANK YOU to each and every volunteer across Montana.  Because of your hard work and commitment we have succeeded in the past and look forward to what can be accomplished in the future.  With your help we continue to work to  “Pass It On”.

THANKS MONTANA VOLUNTEERS FOR A TREMENDOUS YEAR!

What a GREAT time to be a volunteer for the RMEF.  The opportunities for you as a volunteer to do more and/or different volunteer work for the RMEF are increasing every day.   I have talked with many of you about your desire to do more than just raise money.  You have asked what other things you can do to help the RMEF.  Right now the opportunities are many and increasing every day.

For most volunteers your main efforts have centered around putting on outstanding fundraising banquets.  That has not changed.  Banquets are our mainstay for the RMEF by raising funds, putting the RMEF in the local communities and providing membership camaraderie.  Volunteers, through your committees, have raised nearly 7 million net dollars since we started banquets in 1984 in Montana.  As a committee volunteer, each of us need to keep recruiting new committee members.  They bring new ideas, new enthusiasm and new energy.

Members and committees within Montana have enjoyed the support and help of District chair volunteers for the past six years.  These volunteers have been available to help committees with their banquets, help our Regional Directors, Steve and Kirk set statewide goals and target major lands projects within Montana for fundraising.   Several of these targeted efforts have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars from across the country to cover the acquisition costs.  Planning the summer Rendezvous and publishing the Elk Country Legacy Newsletter are also products of the District Chair volunteers.  One of the opportunities for you as a volunteer is to step up and become a District chair.

On the ground, work projects, are becoming more numerous.  We are seeing more chapters seeking out projects with local landowners and land management agencies.  Local committees are implementing several projects that have been approved through the Project Advisory Committee (PAC) for Montana.  These projects provide a time to get your hands in the dirt, pull some fence or weeds, swap stories, brainstorm banquet ideas and share all kinds of information with others. It’s also a great chance to build relationships with landowners, neighbors and other committees.  Who knows what the future may bring with these partnerships.

With the Regionalizing of the RMEF organization, there will be new opportunities for volunteers to step up and do things they have not done in the past.  Volunteers may be closing out banquets, meeting with corporate sponsors, participate or lead banquets, sponsor marketing efforts, or membership drives. You name it and it may be in your future.

We would like to hear from you if you  have the desire to do more for the RMEF.  Contact your Regional Directors or one of your State or District Chairs serving Montana.  Thanks for doing all you do in Montana for the RMEF in “2002”!
